How did flip & tumble get its start?
flip & tumble founders, Hetal Jariwala and Eva Bauer, met while completing their masters degree at Stanford’s Product Design program. Accustomed to solving pesky design problems, the duo joined up to find a solution to the problem of shoppers constantly forgetting their reusable bags. They quickly found that a compact bag you could keep with you all the time could get around this problem. From this learning, Hetal and Eva developed the 24-7 bag, a solution they hoped would be both easy to use and stylish. To test out the concept, they sewed the first 50 bags themselves, and set up shop at a local farmers market. After getting a thumbs up from excited market shoppers, they teamed up to officially launch flip & tumble in July of 2007.
What is flip & tumble about?
That’s simple! flip & tumble is all about making quality products that won’t end up in the landfill. We realize that all products consume material and we consider it a responsibility to make the most out of whatever materials we’re using. For us that means that a product should definitely work well, but it should also do more. It should be beautiful and bring joy through its use. It’s a tall order, but one that we think is very important. To that end, we sweat the small stuff until we think the product is just right functionally and aesthetically. Our hope is that you’ll get oodles of use out of our products, and some smiles along the way.
How does flip & tumble develop its products?
Many of the ideas are borne out of the everyday problems we encounter. Sometimes it’s something that we don’t quite think is working right, or could simply be better. Other times, inspiration comes from an interesting material, manipulating it to explore an interesting use. We utilize simple prototypes to rapidly mock up an idea using a variety of materials such as paper, cardboard, fabric, or even clay.
With any product concept, one of the most important aspects is getting user feedback. We want to make sure that our product works well in the real lives of real people. It’s at this stage that we can find and prevent problems, and make improvements before a product is launched. We then work closely with our manufacturers to find just the right materials and finishing for the final product.
What’s flip & tumble doing to help the planet?
Besides creating green products, we try to keep our footprint on the earth a little lighter by operating as a carbon neutral office. Our carbon credits go towards planet-friendly projects such as exploring clean energy and development of landfill gas capture through Carbonfund. flip & tumble is also a certified Green America Business. To learn more about what this means and what we stand for, check out the Green America link below. It’s also important to us that we take the time to do the little things that matter. Sometimes it’s about using the 2nd side of a piece of paper, recycling our paper and cardboard waste, or avoiding unnecessary car trips.
